Academic Biography
John Robert Carabeo Medina is an assistant professor at the department of epidemiology and biostatistics, college of public health, University of the Philippines Manila (UP Manila) who teaches courses on biostatistics, epidemiology, and public health. As a health science researcher, he is currently working on the spatial epidemiology of dengue disease in the Philippines. He obtained a bachelor’s degree in Public Health from UP Manila and his primary medical qualification from the College of Medicine of the University of the City of Manila (Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila). He received a master’s degree in Health Sciences (Global Health) from the University of the Ryukyus in Okinawa, Japan. He had trainings on using geographic information system from the Rakuno Gakuen University. He also had a research internship on spatial epidemiology at the Mahidol-Oxford Research Unit, Faculty of Tropical Medicine, Mahidol University. Being affiliated with the Neglected Tropical Diseases Study Group of UP Manila, he is involved in epidemiologic studies on soil-transmitted helminthiases and schistosomiasis. His extension services to the local communities include provision of technical assistance to local surveillance units on GIS and using R and statistical data analysis softwares. He is also a core group member of Amentahanan, a community-based support system that helps people living with psychosocial and mental health conditions to access and receive mental health service in Quezon City, Philippines.
